  The Ministry of Energy was established on November 7, 2014, when the 43rd National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria voted on the structure and composition of the new cabinet. In this structure, the former Ministry of Economy and Energy, which also includes the tourism sector, is divided into three separate ministries, one of which is the Department of Energy. In the years since 1989, the energy sector has been segregated several times into a separate structure - a ministry, committee or agency. During this period, energy was first segregated into a ministry in June 1996. At that time, the ministry was called the Ministry of Energy and Energy Resources. In the following years, the sector has been headed by both the agency and the ministry, which has been referred to differently.
